The Mighty Pen

Sometimes I find it’s easier to write things down than to speak them.  I don’t know if that’s true for everyone but I know it is for me.  I love the written word.  I can express feelings and frustrations with little effort on paper, but verbalizing them would be extremely difficult.  Why is that?

I have been using Facebook, twitter and the likes for quite some time now and I enjoy the technology that enables me to keep up with friends and family whether far or near.  But sometimes I have been taken back by the lack of restraint in some of the posts (I’m also guilty of this).  I read some things and it is obvious that there may be more behind the words than is expressed.  Almost like a hidden meaning.  Some may even be a little offensive.

I guess there may be a “new found” courage that comes along with knowing you can simply type a few lines and send it out there and not really have to give account for what has been expressed.  I think we would all benefit from remembering that words are powerful both written and spoken and we are all responsible for those words and their outcome.  May we all write/speak words that bring about positive results; words that encourage and uplift.  Words can mend or break, build up or tear down, leave the reader with a smile or a frown.

Better yet, why don’t we try speaking a bit more? While it may be harder for me to express myself through spoken word, the fact that I’m accountable for what I say helps me to choose my words carefully. People understand each other more through body language associated with what they say. There is less misunderstanding and less hurt that way. I know from personal experience that words can “burn” especially when taken out of context. I will always continue to write but I will also make a conscious effort to speak out more.

Once again, this has been my 2 kobo… Stay blessed.

My heart in God's hands

Some of you may wonder why I have been dwelling on the subject of finding the right person, marriage, etc. Well the answer is simple… or maybe not. Anyway, God has been dealing with me in that area for the last few days. It seems like that is God's Christmas gift to me this year. Let me tell you, it is one of those gifts that is highly beneficial but hard to receive and appreciate. I will be honest; some of the things God has revealed to me concerning His will for me are difficult to swallow.

It has been my habit in the past to dictate to God the way I want my love life to go. I gave no mind to what His will was and is for me in that area. Well, after the last bruising I received at the hands of so-called love, I needed no prodding before I turned to Him for guidance. Sometimes I wish I could still just do things the way I want but I know that no matter how tough things are right now, His ultimate will for me is one that will bring me lasting joy and fulfilment.

Now the latest revelation (which may seem very obvious to some of you but is practically new to me) is that He created me (spirit, soul and body) and therefore everything about me belongs to Him. That includes my heart which is the centre of all my emotions. My heart is not mine to give away; it is up to Him to decide which woman should have it. Therefore, I cannot continue to give it and take it back at will. So my prayer has changed from God, help me to win her heart to God, please take my heart, do what You will with it and hand it over to the woman you have chosen for me.

As soon as I started praying this way, a totally new feeling came over me. While I may still be "disappointed" about not being able to have the woman I have wanted for some months now, (and who's to say she's not the one God is packaging my heart for), I find myself feeling happy to the point of being giddy. I still made an error recently in being particularly rash about a certain matter but I acknowledge that I have a weakness in that regard and trust God to fix whatever damage I may have caused. I was telling a friend a couple of days ago that I feel like I'm in love already. It's a wonderful feeling and I enjoy having it. I feel like the true love that God means for me to have for that certain woman is finally a part of me.

Some people have been asking me who the woman who has swept me off my feet is and my answer to them is I don't know yet although I have an idea who she might be ;-). The thing is when I do find out for sure who she is, she will have my entire heart to herself, and she will be my world, my life, my heart, my all. In fact, she already is all those things to me. Is it strange that I feel all this love for a woman who isn't in the picture yet? Maybe but that's the way God wants it and that's the way it will be. So if you see me and notice a certain spark in my eyes and a spring in my step, don't wonder or be surprised. It's just God working on me and preparing me to take care of one of His wonderful daughters.

Once again, this has been my 2 kobo. Stay blessed and remember me in your prayers.

P.S. I couldn't come up with a good title for this one so I just put something up there.

The Man Whose Ways Contradicted His Name

It is one thing to have a good name, but a different matter altogether to have a life corresponding to that name. Elimelech's name implies that God is King, an expressive name given him by godly parents when the nation followed the Lord. But Elimelech belied the name he bore, for had he truly believed that God was King, he would have stayed in Bethlehem in spite of the prevailing famine.

But one might argue that it was a wise thing to do to leave a famine-stricken land for another land where there was plenty of food for his family. Surely that was a journey any father would undertake to save his dear ones from starvation. But Elimelech was a Jew and as such had the promise, "In the days of famine ye shall be satisfied." Had he firmly believed in the sovereignty of God, Elimelech would have remained in Bethlehem, knowing that need can never throttle God. Had he not declared that bread and water for His own would be sure? Alas, however, Elimelech did not live up to his wonderful name! In going down to Moab, he stepped out of the will of God, who had forbidden His people to have any association with the Moabites. In Moab, Elimelech and his two sons found graves. Yet such a wrong move was overruled by God, for as the result of it, Ruth the Moabitess returned to Bethlehem with Naomi, who was to become the ancestress of our blessed Lord.

He’s still here

The Lord Jesus is in the midst of his church; he walks among the golden candlesticks; his promise is, "Lo, I am with you always." He is as surely with us now as he was with the disciples at the lake, when they saw coals of fire with fish laid on top and bread. Not carnally, but still in real truth, Jesus is with us. And a blessed truth it is, for where Jesus is, love becomes inflamed. Of all the things in the world that can set the heart burning, there is nothing like the presence of Jesus! A glimpse of him can overcome us, that we are ready to say, "Turn away Your eyes from me, for they have overcome me."

Even the smell of the aloes, and the myrrh, and the cassia, which drop from his perfumed garments, causes the sick and the faint to grow strong. Let there be but a moment's leaning of the head upon that gracious bosom, and a reception of his divine love into our poor cold hearts, and we are cold no longer, but glow like angels, equal to every labour, and capable of every suffering. If we know that Jesus is with us, every power will be developed, and every grace will be strengthened, and we shall cast ourselves into the Lord's service with heart, and soul, and strength; therefore the presence of Christ should be desired above all things.

His presence will be most realized by those who are most like him. If you desire to see Christ, you must grow in conformity to him. Bring yourself, by the power of the Spirit, into union with Christ's desires, and motives, and plans of action, and you are likely to be favoured with his company. Remember his presence may be had. His promise is as true as ever. He delights to be with us. If he does not come, it is because we hinder him by our indifference. He will reveal himself to our earnest prayers, and graciously suffer himself to be detained by our entreaties, and by our tears, for these are the golden chains which bind Jesus to his people.

My Year of Preparation

Those of you who are religious and go to churches especially in this part of the world will be used to having themes for every New Year. I attend RCCG and I'm looking forward to finding out what the theme for 2011 will be. However, based on inspiration that I received from God through a very special friend, I have decided to have a personal theme for 2011. It is going to be my "Year of Preparation". You may be wondering what exactly I'm preparing for. Well, flowing from my last blog entry, the subject of marriage has been on my mind lately.

I am 28 going 29 in about four months, I'm a university graduate and I have a steady job. According to a lot of my elders and mentors, the next step for me is marriage. I initially fought against this idea and booked a timeline of four years (2015 or there about) for this to happen. However, I find that my mind set has changed in the last few weeks. I have been doing a lot of praying and reflecting and I've realized that my reason for wanting to wait that long amounts to "limiting God". You see, I thought it would take me that long to get to the point when I would be able to support a family (not just a wife but also at least and little Akinjide Junior). However, who is to say that God doesn't have better plans?

I recently watched the movie "This Christmas" again and one thing Madea said struck me. "If you want to hear the Lord laugh, just tell him what you have planned." Well, I can tell you that I have definitely heard God laugh at my plans several times so this time, I'm leaving it all in His hands. I've also been tempted to give up on finding someone to love who will love me back. Over the last four years, I've fallen in love twice and both times, I've come away with my tail tucked firmly between my legs. The most recent one has been especially painful due to the fact that a relationship never even started between us. But just like the guy climbing the apple tree to get to the best one, I WILL NOT GIVE UP.

I have come to the realization that maybe I'm not ready to love someone yet. Maybe I have some growing up left to do. Maybe I just haven't found "The One" yet. Maybe, maybe, maybe…… Whatever the answer is, one thing is for sure, I will use this New Year to prepare to love and cherish that special woman. The one I am lucky enough to be loved by. The one who I will have and hold till death do us part. It will be a year of constant prayer that apple that God has prepared for me will hang on to the branch till I get to it. I also pray that God will accelerate my progress and give me the perseverance that I need so that the apple doesn't have to hang on for too long.

My dear friends, this may sound funny or strange to you but this is a matter that is now close to my heart. I teased my friend when she first told me about her plan and I'm sure she will be pleasantly surprised to know that I have latched on to it and claimed it for myself also. There will be a testimony that will be shared on this blog by this time next year. Don't get too excited yet, the testimony will probably not be about marriage but it will definitely be about a relationship that is getting very close to it. My better half is out there. My life, my love, my all is out there waiting to be found. I pray God opens my eyes so that I may find her.

Once again, this has been my 2 kobo. Stay blessed and Merry Christmas.

Girls and fruit

Was doing some Christmas cleaning and found this little not tucked away between some books.

"Girls are like apples... the best ones are at the top of the trees. The boys don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they go for the rotten apples that are on the ground that aren't as good, but are easy to reach. So the apples on the top think there is something wrong with them when in reality, they are amazing. They just have to wait for the right boy to come along, the one who is brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree."

There are a lot of girls out there who have been waiting to be found but seem to keep getting overlooked. Let this be a note of encouragement for you that some really amazing guy who is perfect for you is out there trying his best to climb that tree and get to you. You just have to wait and pray that God will send him the help he may need to persevere and make it all the way to the top where you are.

And for you guys out there who are making the effort but seem to always get rejected (I am a case study for this situation and reading this note has encouraged me too), keep striving. Your apple is at the top waiting for you. Just ask God to give you what it takes to make it all the way to the top. You might pick an apple and it slips put of your hands and falls into another person's hands or simply falls where you can't reach it. Don't worry, a better one is waiting for you on a higher branch and God is telling you that you need to keep climbing. Its a tough climb and I know this personally but I believe and hope and pray that you believe with me that it will be worth the effort.

This is once again my 2 kobo. Stay bless and have a wonderful Christmas. May your 2011 be better that you could ever imagine.

Bad Parents: Suing McDonald’s For Misleading Kids

The siege towers have been moved to McDonald’s headquarters. Some cities want the company to stop the practice of the use of toys to entice children to eat high-calorie fatty food. Others want the fast food firm to cut back on its sale of sugary sodas. One alternative in circulation is that chains like McDonald’s should pay a fat tax for every cheeseburger they sell.
The latest move against McDonald’s is a class action suit filed by a woman in California Superior Court in San Francisco. The suit has the support of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The organization describes itself an an advocate of good nutrition and food safety. It says it has a successful record of getting companies to improve the quality of their menus.
Monet Parham made the decision to stop McDonald’s use of toys to market directly to young children. “According to Parham, the main reason her six-year-old daughter, Maya, asks to go to McDonald’s is to get toys based on Barbie, i-Carly, Shrek, or Strawberry Shortcake. The food seems almost beside the point to the kids, says Parham, because the toy monopolizes the attention of Maya and her two-year-old sister Lauryn,” the CSPI says.
“I am concerned about the health of my children and feel that McDonald’s should be a very limited part of their diet and their childhood experience,” Parham said. “But as other busy, working moms and dads know, we have to say ‘no’ to our young children so many times, and McDonald’s makes that so much harder to do. I object to the fact that McDonald’s is getting into my kids’ heads without my permission and actually changing what my kids want to eat.”
The situation is one of bad parenting more than false advertising. It does not matter what sort of nutritionally poisoned food McDonald’s sells. It is certainly not an issue for the courts. Monet Parham is really saying that she has no control over a six-year old and two-year old. The power of McDonald’s advertising is so overwhelming that she cannot even lock the kids in their rooms and feed them fresh fruit and cottage cheese. She has no ability to keep their food intake below the FDA suggested limit of 2,500 calories a day. McDonald’s has forced her to drive many miles to one of its stores so that her two children can eat 5,000 calories at one sitting. Those calories come from food that has nearly no nutritional value.
A man sued McDonald’s once because the coffee he bought there was too hot. He burned himself, and its was the fast food company’s fault. He forgot that coffee is often served hot, particularly when the restaurant says so. Fat kids and their parents must have gone to McDonald’s with no idea what they would be offered.
GET REAL PEOPLE!

Going Too Fast

Had a dream the other day and I could only take it as a warning about how I could end up speeding through life and losing out on several opportunities. I will try my best to narrate the events of this dream to you.

About ten years in the future, I am a very successful executive travelling down a Lekki neighborhood street. I'm going a bit too fast in my sleek, black, 12-cylinder Lexus LX970 SUV, which at the time is only two months old. I'm watching for pedestrians darting out from between parked cars and I slow down whenever I think I see something. No child darts out, but all of a sudden a brick sails out and, WHUMP, it smashes into the Lexus's shiny black side door! SCREECH...!!!! I slam on my brakes! Put the car into reverse, and with my tires spinning madly return the car back to the spot from where the brick had been thrown. I jump out of the car, grab the kid responsible and push him up against a parked car. I shout at the kid, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?!" Building up a head of steam, I go on and on. "That's my new car, that brick you threw is going to cost your parents a lot of money. Why did you throw it?"

"Please, mister, please...I'm sorry! I didn't know what else to do!" pleads the youngster. "I threw the brick because no one else would stop!"

Tears are dripping down the boy's chin as he points around the parked car. "It's my brother, Mister," he says. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up." Sobbing, the boy asks me, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me."

Moved beyond words, try desperately to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in my throat.

Straining, I lift the young man back into the wheelchair and take out my handkerchief and wipe the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that everything is going to be OK. I then watch the younger brother push him down the sidewalk toward their home. It's a long walk back to the sleek, black, shining, 12-cylinder Lexus LX970 -- a long and very slow walk.

I decide never to fix the side door of my car. I keep the dent to remind me not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at me to get my attention.

That brick was small compared to what will be required to stop some of you my dear readers.

Watch out for the bricks of life coming at you.

The Most Beautiful Heart

One day a young man was standing in the middle of the town proclaiming that he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley.

A large crowd gathered and they all admired his heart for it was perfect. There was not a mark or a flaw in it. Yes, they all agreed it truly was the most beautiful heart they had ever seen. The young man was very proud and boasted more loudly about his beautiful heart.

Suddenly, an old man appeared at the front of the crowd and said, "Why your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine." The crowd and the young man looked at the old man's heart. It was beating strongly, but full of scars, it had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces put in, but they didn't fit quite right and there were several jagged edges. In fact, in some places there were deep gouges where whole pieces were missing.

The people stared? "How can he say his heart is more beautiful?" they thought.

The young man looked at the old man's heart and saw its state and laughed. "You must be joking," he said. "Compare your heart with mine, mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars and tears."

"Yes," said the old man, "Yours is perfect looking but I would never trade with you. You see, every scar represents a person to whom have given my love - I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they give me a piece of their heart which fits into the empty place in my heart, but because the pieces aren't exact, I have some rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of the love we shared."

"Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away, and the other person hasn't returned a piece of his heart to me. These are the empty gouges - giving love is taking a chance. Although these gouges are painful, they stay open, reminding me of the love I have for these people too, and I hope someday they may return and fill the space I have waiting. So now do you see what true beauty is?"

The young man stood silently with tears running down his cheeks.

He walked up to the old man, reached into his perfect young and beautiful heart, and ripped a piece out. He offered it to the old man with trembling hands. The old man took his offering, placed it in his heart and then took a piece from his old scarred heart and placed it in the wound in the young man's heart. It fit, but not perfectly, as there were some jagged edges.

The young man looked at his heart, not perfect anymore but more beautiful than ever, since love from the old man's heart flowed into his.

They embraced and walked away side by side.
